The Canadian heavy metal scene is more alive than ever. Fans of the genre are fortunate as there is a huge amount of choice when it comes to bands. Some are relatively new groups that have already attained a large fan base. Others are veteran bands with large back catalogues to listen to.
Exciter
This group has often been compared to Metallica. They were early pioneers of Canadian metal and influenced the development of thrash as a sub-genre. Some of their most iconic albums include Violence And Force, Heavy Metal Maniac and Unveiling The Wicked. Despite being an older band, they continue to wow crowds at their live gigs. The world of heavy metal would be much more boring without Exciter.
Beneath The Massacre
Hailing from Montreal, this band blurred the lines between industrial music and metal. Their first album, Mechanics Of Dysfunction, came out in 2007. It allowed other groups to experiment with the genre. The sound of this band is very brutal and even frightening. However, it is also filled with technical skill and clear precision from each musician.
Annihilator
The guitarist for this band is Jeff Waters, who is widely regarded as one of the best in the business. He has been part of Annihilator for more than 40 years. They were formed in Ottawa in 1984 and released hit albums such as Never Neverland and Alice In Hell. They are now considered classics of the genre. The group has retained a consistent thrash metal sound.
Anvil
Anvil is a beloved and is an old school band. They have been the subject of a hit documentary, which helped to spread their appeal across the world. One of their most well known musical releases was a contribution to the soundtrack of the horror film Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers.
